Joshua's Story

Like most every rambunctious toddler you know, Joshua is always on the move. So it was quickly apparent to his mother, something was wrong when suddenly he began limping. On July 1, just 15 days before his third birthday, Joshua was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. The disease is a form of cancer that develops from nerve cells. The rare cancer, which has no known cause, most often strikes two to three year olds. Generally true of the illness, Joshua's tumor was found in the adrenal gland, near the kidney, which was the source of the pain that caused his limp. Today, Joshua is in stage four of the illness. That means the disease has spread form its original location to a very distant area, such as bone marrow, bones liver or lymph nodes. To battle the illness, he is undergoing chemotherapy and blood and platelet transfusions.

What is Neuroblastoma?

Neuroblastoma is one of the most common cancers affecting children today, forming 8%-10% of the total seen from birth through age 14 years. It is a solid tumor seen most often in the newborn period and the median age at diagnosis is 2 years. It has a wide range of "virulence"; children with localized Neuroblastoma can be cured by surgery alone but those with bone metastases usually have a fatal outcome. It is a disease in which cancer cells are found in certain nerve cells within the body. Neuroblastoma typically begins in the abdominal area either in the adrenal gland (located just above the kidney) or around the spinal cord in the neck, chest, or pelvis. As the prognosis for Neuroblastoma patients is not encouraging, (40% of 124 children did not survive after two years and 65% of patients do not survive 3 years), it is important to identify all environmental circumstances that can contribute to the disease, once these are identified, they can be removed, thereby improving the likelihood for spontaneous remission.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awake in the morning's hush,
I am the soft uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight
I am the soft star that shines at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there. I did not die.
